Why are Firestop Products needed?

Simply put, firestop products are now mandatory and are required by all model building codes. More importantly, firestop products can play a significant part in reducing the number of lives and property lost due unnecessarily to the rapid spread of fire and smoke.

How do Firestop Products work?

Firestop products work by filling the voids around penetrating items in fire rated walls and floors. Most Metacaulk® firestop products intumesce, or expand, in the presence of heat. The intumescing action actually seals the penetration and stops the spread of flames and smoke to other floors and rooms.

What is a Firestop System?

A firestop system consists of a fire rated wall or floor, a penetrating item (pipe, cable, conduit, etc.) and the firestop sealant. Only the total firestop system is tested and listed by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., (UL), Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC) and/or Warnock Hersey (WHI), not just the firestop product alone.

What if I have an application in which no system exists?

It is not uncommon to come across an application in which no UL system exists. In such cases, RectorSeal may be able to supply Certified Installation Instructions for that application. Contact RectorSeal Technical Services at (800) 231-3345.

Are Firestop Products required to pass any performance tests?

Yes. Several tests have been designed to rate the performance of firestop products. One of the most important tests is ASTM E-814 FIRE TESTS OF THROUGH – PENETRATION FIRESTOPS. In addition, UL has developed UL 1479 FIRE TESTS OF THROUGH – PENETRATION FIRESTOPS and UL 2079 for construction joints, to evaluate the performance of firestop systems.

What basic information is needed to determine a proper Firestopping configuration?

  1. Type and description of the fire rated wall or floor.
  2. The size of the hole.
  3. The description and number of the penetrating item(s).


Who is responsible for Firestopping?

The responsibility for firestopping is multi-layered. It is the architects/engineers responsibility to see that firestopping designs are written into blue prints and into specifications. The local building official/inspector is responsible to see that firestopping materials/applications are installed correctly and that all materials/systems used meet local/regional building codes. General contractors, sub-contractors, and specialty contractors are responsible for getting approval from local jurisdiction prior to installing firestopping materials and for installing those materials correctly.

Are Metacaulk Firestopping Products difficult to install?

Not at all. Metacaulk firestopping products are contractor friendly. Our products are tested to achieve the highest performance rating using minimal amounts of product and simple to install applications. This cuts down on labor costs, thus creating a cost savings to the contractor!

Can Firestopping Products be used as a “high temperature” sealant or “what temperature will your product take?”

This question is usually asked when the customer wishes to use the product as a gasket or filler around a furnace door or another constantly elevated temperature condition. When testing firestop applications, temperatures within the furnace can reach upwards of 2,000 degrees F. However, these are under fire conditions and not day to day constant exposure. Most firestop sealants will start to change chemically or physically at relatively low temperatures (150 to 350 degrees F). Therefore, assigning a temperature range for firestop materials would not be useful since they are designed to react to a fire and function within that one time condition.
